Day 3: Your Support Network
7 Day HA Recovery Kick Off Challenge
You can’t do this alone. Here’s how to enroll your family, friends and community in recovery.
Before we start, I want to extend an invitation for you to work through this content with me 1:1, every week. Together, you and I can meet, create a game plan and execute it to fast track your way to period-city. Check out our personal recovery coaching program and fill out the application!
Tools for today’s challenge
Scripts you can use:
Telling someone that you’ve decided to work towards recovery:
“For [XX amount of time] I’ve been struggling to get my period to be regular. I’ve been researching and have discovered that having a healthy period is really important so I’ve decided to prioritize that. This means you might see me resting more and eating more food! I’m telling you this because there may be some challenges for me along the way and I’d love for you to know what’s happening with me so that you can be sensitive to the issue or support me if I need that. Thanks! PS: want to grab a pizza next week?”
When someone doesn’t understand that just because you don’t want to have a baby, that doesn’t mean you don’t need your period:
“My period isn’t just for reproduction! Having a period is actually a sign of overall health! When I have a period every month it means that I’m producing enough of the hormones my body needs to allow me to actually get stronger in the gym, keep my bones strong and it even affects the way I look. When my period is missing my skin is more dry, my hair and nails are weaker. When I have a period I glow more and feel energized. So the gym isn’t actually the only thing I need to get stronger and be fit.
In a way, going to the gym to stay fit but having no period doesn’t make any sense! It’s going to move my strength gains and body composition changes backward in the long term but if I work on getting my period now by stopping to over exert myself, I’ll be able to actually get back into the gym sooner and actually perform better instead of continuing to drive myself into the ground.”
When some is making a comment about your weight:
“For [XX amount of time] I’ve been struggling to get my period to be regular. I’ve been researching and have discovered that having a healthy period involves being at a higher body weight. This means you might see me resting more, eating more and I may even gain a little weight.”
When someone tries to tell you to just “go on the pill:
“I’ve been researching and have discovered that having a natural period is a great health marker and that cycling naturally without the pill is really good for women so I’m avoiding that method.”
You’ll notice that I haven’t gone down that rabbit hole of telling people that the pill isn’t a real bleed and it’s not good for you. The reason for that is because, in my experience, this can rock some people's world and cause a heated debate that isn’t fun for anyone.
When we start to learn about the true effects of the birth control pill we can become very passionate very quickly, which can actually deter and upset people. Not because you’ve done something wrong, but because you’re challenging heir beliefs which many people hold closely to their egos. Obviously not everyone is going to get offended, but if you don’t feel like going on a TedTalk about the birth control pill when the point is to get someone on board with your HA recovery, simply stating that you’d rather avoid that method for your own reasons is great. When they are ready to open up that conversation, you’ll be there.
Optional Assignment
Ready to share publicly?
Look, letting the world in on what’s happening is NOT for everyone but for a select group of people, like yours truly, sharing my journey has leveled up the support I’ve been able to get. Not only that but by sharing my story I’ve been able to impact the lives of other women. When I shared about my HA on social media I was able to help inspire other women to do the same and I am so so thankful for that experience. If you share publicly PLEASE tag me in your post so that I can see it and support you too.
Then let me know how this went for you! Who did you tell and what happened?!
While you do that, start pondering on your exercise activity too because tomorrow we make the commitment to make some changes there, too.
