HA vs HA + PCOS (now called PMOS) Case Study

It has taken a while for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom (now called polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) to be recognized by medical professionals and it is now starting to get the attention it needs. And for the record, we CELEBRATE that. This is excellent news for women who have PCOS/PMOS. They deserve to get the help they need so that they can start healing.

But what happens if you don’t have PCOS and instead you HA or HA + PCOS/PMOS?!?!? We understand that it can get confusing so we wanted to share 2 case studies so that you can see the difference and avoid these 2 pitfalls.

Pitfall #1- Irregular/Missing Period

Just because your period is irregular or has been missing of X amount of months/years, this does NOT indicate that you have PCOS. Irregular cycles can also be from LEA (low energy availability) and missing cycles can also be from to HA (hypothalamic amenorrhea). So how do you know if your irregular/missing period is from PCOS, LEA or HA? Labs and context. We must look at the WHOLE person to have a better understanding of the root cause of your irregular/missing cycles.

Pitfall #2 - Elevated HA1c

Having elevated HA1c is scary and definitely something that should be taken seriously. However, elevated HA1c and a missing period is not a guarantee that someone has PCOS. We must look at the WHOLE person. Here at the HA Society, we are obsessed with looking at the WHOLE story.
